About Us

Our outreach team is made up of two groups that collaborate closely with each other: McGill Physics Outreach and Trottier Space Institute (TSI) Outreach. Together, we aim to communicate the fascinating world of Physics and Astronomy research to the general public, students, and our community. The McGill Physics Outreach and TSI Outreach teams are comprised of talented outreach graduate coordinators, faculty, and staff, who strive to share our passion for science to the community.

We organize a variety of events in Montreal for the general public, educators, and our own McGill community, none of which would be possible without our growing team of dedicated volunteers.

Our Guiding Principles
  • Inclusivity: science is for everyone!
  • Strong communication requires strong relationships, built on transparency, honesty, trust, and reciprocity.
  • Co-creation: we prioritize co-creation and iterative design in the development of our programs, working with and for community
  • Sustainability & Achievability: Develop programming that is viable, feasible, and in tune with the needs of our partners
  • Compassion: Science is done by people
Our Objectives
  • Demystify physics and astronomy research, showing that science is interesting, accessible, and human;
  • Build and maintain strong, sustainable relationships with community, partners, students, volunteers, and organizers;
  • Provide opportunities for students and postdocs to develop science communication and science engagement skills;
  • Promote the research that we do at TSI and McGill Physics and the people who do it

For The Public

Public Astro Night, brought to you by the McGill University Department of Physics and the Trottier Space Institute
Lectures are now organized in partnership with the Trottier Space Institute. To hear about upcoming lectures, follow us on Facebook or join our mailing list.

For more online activities and resources on Science, visit the Science Outreach page of the Faculty of Science!

The physics department at McGill and the McGill Space Institute also hosts the Anna I. McPherson public lecture series, which brings distinguished physicists to McGill to give both technical and public lectures, as well as public astro nights

For Educators

Are you an educator passionate about bringing interactive and exciting physics activities into your classroom?

Connect with us to explore our educational partnership opportunities! Dive into our “Space Explorers” program, where we visit classrooms to engage young minds with hands-on experiments, teaching them about gravity, density, and more through fun, inquiry-based activities. Or join “Science in Space,” a unique initiative empowering students in STEM, especially girls and marginalized genders, through building telescopes in Minecraft under the guidance of our mentors.

For Students

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student interested in volunteering with us? Please contact us by email!

Are you thinking about studying physics at McGill? We host the department’s annual open house for anyone interested in visiting our labs or learning what it’s like to study physics in the department. Last but not least, the annual McGill Physics Hackathon is another great platform for students interested in physics or programming—everyone is welcome with or without experience, and from all age groups.

Volunteer Outreach Picnic

Every Fall we host an outdoor picnic for McGill students to learn about Physics Outreach, AstroMcGill, and the Equity, Diversity, & Inclusivity Group in the McGill Physics Department. You’ll get to learn about the McGill Physics Hackathon, Space Explorers, the Astro/Physics McGill Public Lecture series, the McGill Physics Olympiad, Science in Space: How to Telescope, Observatory Open Houses, and the paid outreach
coordinator roles you can apply for in place of a TAship! The 2024 picnic will be announced soon!

McGill Physics Hackathon

The McGill Physics Hackathon started in 2016, is an annual hackathon devoted to solving and visualizing physics problems. Participant teams will be challenged to use scientific computing tools and/or microelectronic gadgets to demonstrate a concept, phenomenon or application involving the physical
sciences. Volunteers are needed for a variety of different aspects of the event! Email hackathon@physics.mcgill.ca for more information.

Special Thanks To Our Partners!
